HISTORY

Charles Towne York Rite College No. 113 was founded by members of Palmetto York Rite College No. 70 of Columbia, South Carolina. On the 21st of May 1985, 10 members of Palmetto York Rite College No. 70, residing in the city of Charleston, held a meeting in the Masonic Center, 1285 Orange Grove Road, Charleston to determine if a York Rite College could be held in Charleston, South Carolina. It was determined at this first meeting that the proposed name of this College if approved by the Sovereign College of North America would be named Charles Towne. Charles Towne was selected as the name due to the fact that the City of Charleston was at one time called Charles Towne. Present at this meeting was Companion Knight, Andrew C. Gramling Jr., acting Grand Governor of South Carolina who stated that due to the number of members of Palmetto York Rite College No. 70, now living in Charleston, a College could be established here in the city of Charleston.

The following members of Palmetto York Rite College No. 70 were present at this meeting: Andrew C. Gramling Jr., acting Grand Governor, Sam H.J. Womack, William S. Tyler, Past Grand High Priest, Grand Chapter of SC, Victor Ronald DuBose, Lloyd F. Christopher, August E. Kertnar, John H. Martschink Jr., William August Von Dohlen, Past Grand Commander, Grand Commandery of SC, James E. Wilson, George F. Lee, Joel W. Frampton Jr., Past Grand Master, Grand Lodge of South Carolina, Bobby R. Faulkner, and Elmer Ray Sult.

It was determined from those present that the following would be the very first Officers of Charles Towne York Rite College, UD.

On the 25th of June 1985, a certificate of Dispensation was issued from the Sovereign York Rite College of North America, by Gordon H. Stuart, Governor General and Henry Montague, Secretary General to form Charles Towne York Rite College U.D, with William S. Tyler as Governor, Jesse C. Branham, Deputy Governor and Victor Ronald DuBose as Chancellor.

On the 2nd of October 1986, A Special Assembly of Charles Towne York Rite College U.D. was held in the Scottish Rite Temple, Charleston for the purpose of Charles Towne York Rite College U.D. receiving its Charter with the number 113 on the rolls of the Sovereign York Rite College of North America. Present at this Assembly and escorted to the East for instituting our College was Most Preeminently Distinguished Brother, Howard P Bennett, Governor General of the Sovereign York Rite College of North America. The following distinguished Companion Knights of the Sovereign College of North America were also present to institute our College: Right Eminently Distinguished Brother, Andrew C. Gramling, Grand Governor of South, Very Eminently Distinguished Brother, Willard Faroe Bond, Jr., Deputy Grand Governor of South Carolina, and Past Grand High Priest, of the Grand Chapter of South Carolina, Eminently Distinguished Brother Francis Dancy, Grand Standard Bearer, Right Eminently Distinguished Brother Edward Saunders, Grand Governor of Virginia, Very Eminently Distinguished Brother George Yates, Deputy Grand Governor of Virginia and Right Eminently Distinguished Brother S. Flory Diehl, Grand Governor of Maryland.

The following distinguished Masons of South Carolina were also present: Most Worshipful Brother Jesse C. Branham, Grand Master, Most Worshipful Brother Joel W. Frampton, Past Grand Master and Grand Treasurer, William S. Tyler, Past Grand High Priest, Most Excellent Companion, Everett T. Deitz, Grand High Priest, South Carolina. Right Eminent Sir Knight, William E. Fuller, Grand Commander, Grand Commandery of South Carolina, Sam H. J. Womack, Past Most Excellent Great Chief, Grand Council Knight Masons, USA.

The following out of state visitors were also present: Jack F. Ehlloh, Past Governor, Phelps College No. 31, Florida, George D. Stevens, Chancellor, Commonwealth York Rite College No. 50 of Virginia, Robert Beck, California College No. 50, Clarence K. Jones, Governor Generals College, Past Grand Master, Past Grand High Priest, Past Grand Illustrious Master and past Grand Commander. William Cominolo, South California College No. 108, Ardell Stroup, Golden Triangle College No. 32, Pittsburgh, PA, James Robinson, Golden Triangle College No. 32, Pittsburgh, PA and E. L. Green, Secretary J.B. Phelps College No. 31 of Florida.

Prior to presenting our College with its Charter, Most Eminently Distinguished Brother Howard P. Bennett, Governor General, along with several Sovereign College officers conferred the Degrees of the College on John A. Green Jr., and elected member of our College. Degree work being completed, Most Eminently Distinguished Brother Howard P. Bennett, along with several Sovereign College Officers installed the following as the first officers of Charles Towne York Rite College No. 113:

After the installation of Officers, Most Eminently Distinguished Brother Howard P. Bennett, Governor General of the Sovereign York Rite College of North America presented Charles Towne York Rite College No. 113 with its Charter.
